I
was saying to James it been four years since the last album, so what
sort of music had you been listening to prior to going into the studio?
Well certainly the music we were into,
like Queens Of The Stone Age, Chris Goss, Ian Astbury, and Autolux
you know, people who then featured on the album really. When we went
out to LA, we knew the sort of musicianship we were going to obtain,
and the direction the album was going to take.
Although I don't think the music we were
listening to had an effect on the record we produced, I mean I was
listening to Marky Moon each day on the way to the studio. I'd just
discovered him, and I thought the music was sick. The album touches
a little bit on 'Broken', with the guitars it started out very Television-esque,
but really I tried to separate what I was listening to - to what we
were making in the studio. I couldn't think for 3 months 24-7 what
we were making in the studio because it would have driven me insane!
The group I manage start their creative
process by playing each other records in the studio, and by talking
about what they like in each one, then begin to put together the plans
for their new record, is that how you and James go about it?
Yeah, we might find a sample that we want to
base that track around, whether it be me playing guitar, or James
singing over a sample... things that have come on the day, or things
that we have thought about the night before, or hearing something
someone else has done, it can happen many ways. You could hear two
seconds of a jam, and think about how you could loop it up, basically
you're always listening, you're ears are always pricked up for some
kind of inspiration you know.
Is there any burning issue that's on your
mind at the moment that may keep you awake at night?
No, no. Actually I made a point this year of
not letting any burning issues be on my mind after midnight!
