The C.P. Company Goggle Jacket was originally designed by Massimo Osti as a gift, as part of C.P. Company's sponsorship involvement in the 1988 edition of the iconic Mille Miglia (thousand Miles) Italian open road endurance race. its design features embody the cautious study of all functionality and innovation details derived from car racing. To celebrate 20 years since its release, C.P. Company invited RCA graduate (2006) Aitor Throup to re-invent this icon of clothing design, resulting in a forward-thinking ergonomic driving concept:

When I was asked to re-design my personal icon of design, I was obviously honoured. Now the jacket has been released, and I am honoured once again, to curate an exhibition about it in a place very close to my heart: The Royal College of Art. I owe much to the original Goggle Jacket, for it inspired and taught me a great deal. I equally owe much to this exceptional school, and particularly to Ike Rust (Head of Menswear) for the very same reasons. I spent many hours in the 7th floor studio obsessing over the idea of 'process' being more important than 'product'; and in some ways, that is the idea behind this exhibition.

Our aim is to present a sort of chronology of this icon of design and culture, going back to the very first version (1988) and ending with my re-designed version. The exhibition also offers an unusual look at the design process itself, with the actual first blocking sculpture and subsequent calico prototype suspended with the same amount of importance as the adjacent 'finished' piece. There is also a sort of 3-dimensional step-by-step 'user guide' showing how all of the jacket's driving-based features function. We don't just want to show what the jacket is, we want to show what it's about..
