Heat Wave at DOE Shanghai

DOE Shanghai Heat Wave

On August 29th DOE and Converse will host HEAT WAVE a pop-up experience celebrating the summer vibes in Shanghai. Building on DOE's strong local network but also extending their international reach the retailer will welcome friends and family as well as guests from Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam to participate in a relaxing day with fashion, art, music, food, and drinks. The store's two-floor space will feature showcases by three new additions to DOE's brands list – exclusive for the Chinese market – and a special set-up to highlight the recent launch of Converse's CHUCK II. As an extension, DOE's backyard will be turned into an open-air lounge.

For HEAT WAVE DOE has set its focus on Europe: Futur from Paris, Ambivalent and Beinghunted from Berlin are progressive labels who have been active in their respective domains for some time, gradually building distribution and international recognition. Together with DOE as a strong partner in the Chinese market, all three will launch their fall collections exclusively during this all-day event. As musical guest Jarreau Vandal of music collective Soulection will make his way to Shanghai from his home in Amsterdam. Renowned Parisian artist Wu Yue has been brought on board for a live-painting session taking place in the open-air area. To round off the line-up, Shanghai-based creative collective Yeti in the Basement have been invited to add some local flavor to the musical experience.

Parapluie Des Pyrénées

Paraplui de Berger French Shepherd Umbrella 01

Made in France

When I met Hiroki Nakamura in Paris a while back, he showed me a vintage umbrella that he had found in an antiques shop. This piece appears similar to the traditional shepherd umbrellas still produced in the Pyrenees region of France. Apparently only 10 artisans are left who master the craft of creating these intricate, sturdy, thus long-lasting masterpieces.

To discover more about the "Paraplui de Berger", the "Shepherd Umbrella", visit the workshop of Hervé Pando and his son Christophe. You can pick up the "Vértible Berger" at Paraplui Paris and Piganiol who produce their own versions.

Civilist Nike SB Spree Pack

Civilist x Nike SB Spree Pack Pair

Berlin, July 2015

The launch of the Civilist Berlin Nike SB Spree Pack was, without a doubt, the release of the season and the biggest event during Berlin Fashion Week. The Boys of Brunnen had invited a select group of friends and family to a boat cruise on the river Spree - the inspiration for the design of their shoe - and an island BBQ outside of the city, afterwards. A memorable event, and in its scope surely adequate as this pack is a true highlight this year!

Besides the shoes, a Zoom Janoski PR and Janoski Max, Civilist have also produced a number of goodies to go along with this pack.

Both models are available from global Nike SB accounts today. The special Nike SB Spree Pack items are exclusive to Civilist.

It's been twelve years since the last series of BEINGHUNTED. T-shirts came out. Who remembers the PacMan tees designed by Gasius. If you picked up the current - 10th - issue of Hypebeast Magazine you'll also find a picture of the BEINGSTÜSSY anniversary T-shirt I did back in 2005.

While there are more designs in the making, scheduled for a late August release, I'm happy that the Colorwheel Logo is finally ready and available from today. Civilist Berlin in Berlin has them in-store but also online. I'm setting up a small online shop shortly, too, until then - drop me a message through the site and we'll work something out!

Axel Hoedt Dusk

Axel Hoedt Fast Nacht 02

Carnival Culture

After two years, Axel Hoedt's follow up "Dusk" is finally available from Steidl:

"Following Once A Year (Steidl, 2013), Dusk continues Axel Hoedt’s journey through the carnival culture of southwestern Germany and extends it into Austria and Switzerland. Hoedt’s project is to undermine traditional (and often clichéd) representations of carnival: here are no paraders somersaulting before the crowds, no embarrassing scenes of drunken debauchery. Instead, he photographs the revelers in earnest poses, static against a bright background, in a forest or next to rural buildings, juxtaposing classic studio photography, Polaroid snapshots and still-life imagery. Often installing the quaint colorful masks within an unforgiving winter environment, Hoedt reminds us of what carnival once used to be: a final celebration before the dawning of hard times."

Patagonia Logo T-shirt

Patagonia Classic Logo

I haven't seen this basic logo T-shirt in a while so it was a nice surprise to stumble upon it during my casual Sunday (online) shopping spree. Besides a nice selection of bright colors–Gravel Heather and Atoll Aqua being my favorites–there is truly only one to be had, and that's obviously the white

"We've spent decades climbing, biking, backpacking and paddling in it: The classic P6 logo endures. Here it's printed (with PVC- and phthalate-free inks) on our standard-weight, ringspun and supersoft 5.4-oz 100% Texas co-op organic cotton jersey. Taped shoulder seams and ribbing at the neck for superior comfort. Coverstitched neck and armholes provide a clean finish."

a number of names x FPAR Droogs T-shirt

Collaboration

The a number of names* x Forty Percents Against Rights (FPAR®) Droogs T-shirt is now available from the anon* store and web shop.

Here is a bit more info:

"a number of names* have teamed up to collaborate with FPAR® from their stable of brands. Giving them an open brief to make something in their house style that somehow linked to a number of names*. What they came back with was a tee with ‘droogs’ written on the front in the a number of names* house style, influenced by Repo Man and Ralph’s supermarket own label products. (Droog means friend in Nadzat which is the teenage argot, or slang from the Anthony Burgess novel A Clockwork Orange). When Tet from FPAR® first met Craig from anon* they immediately bonded over Craig’s business card which simply said business card on one side, with the dual stripe underneath. Tet immediately recognised it from the film Repo Man and later the PIL ALBUM cover. Tet and Craig discussed a mutual love of UK youth culture films like Bronco Bullfrog and A Clockwork Orange. It therefore made total sense when FPAR® sent the tee design to anon*."

Hypebeast 10th Anniversary

10th Anniversary

For the occasion of Hypebeast's 10th Anniversary and the coinciding 10th issue of their magazine, the guys asked me to put together a feature on the most memorable collaborations of the past decade. A nice opportunity to dig into my archive, and to source a few of the items that I did not get my hands on back then. Other than shooting these items in a neutral/white-cube environment I decided to treat them as what they are - or will be in 20-30 years time: artifacts that constitute a particular design aesthetic with an inherent cultural relevance. Thanks to Ken-Tonio Yamamoto, his team, and the talented girls at vogelfrai, the photos and accompanying behind-the-scenes video turned out quite well.

Take a look at the video here and if you like, pick up the magazine which should be available globally just around now.

Thanks to Ludwig Matt / Burton, Kojiro / Fragment Design, Mike / the POOL aoyama, and the HB crew!

Barry McGee & Todd James: Fud

V1 Contemporary Art Center: Barry McGee & Todd James: Fud

V1 Contemporary Art Center is pleased to welcome back Barry McGee and Todd James for their second double exhibition in Copenhagen.

The exhibition consists of new works in a variety of media – paintings on canvas and wood, sculpture, drawing and an array of various elements. The exhibition is organized, or disorganized, as a collaborative installation between the two artists. Booth artists work with a distinct, bold and iconic visual language. In FUD the two merge creating rhythm and disruption, visual punk. Todd James and Barry McGee have throughout their careers been interested in the periphery, people and places just outside or inside “the normal”. They both understand and sometimes champion the outsider and see beauty in anarchy and autonomy. Their artistic output has a rare empathetic quality, delivering critique and resistance in a consumerist culture obsessed with progress, without falling into the pitfall of righteousness.

José Parlá: Detras del Muro

José Parlá: Behind the Walls, Havana, Cuba

Behind the wall, where public art meets the public, presents a group of sculptural paintings by José Parlá at the entrance of the Antonio Maceo Park in the Malecón wall along the sea in Havana. The works suggest cultural fragments salvaged from urban sites that have experienced social and cultural upheaval and transformation. As do segments of city walls, Parlá's sculptures bear witness to waves of history that seem to be inscribed on their surfaces, told in an expressive and poetic language, the artist documents his experiences of places he has lived in. These works act as palimpsests on which ensuing generatons might imagine their own manifestos and declarations of selfhood.

The installation curated by Juanito Delgado Calzadilla is part of the Behind the Mural project for the 12th Havana Biennial, Havana Cuba.

Apart from Adolfo's jacket, surely, Shawn also posted a picture of the one he did for Keith that he never got to give him, sadly enough…

Saving Kicks from Decay

Oji Nagomo Air Max 1995, OG - decay

on Wired.com

A great article on every sneaker collector's worst nightmare - the decay of the precious collectibles after 20+ years.

"As soon as he planted his feet, Oji sensed something was terribly wrong. The midsoles flattened, and his footing became strangely unstable. He didn’t realize it at the time, but the polyurethane (PU), that squishy, shock-absorbing material sandwiched between the upper and the outer sole, was more than ten years past its projected lifespan.

After just one step, the hardened PU foam fractured and collapsed, like arid soil crumbling beneath the boots of a Dust Bowl Okie."

at Civilist Berlin

Thanks to an early delivery at my local Civilist branch here in Berlin, I was fortunate to see them in the flesh a few days before the official launch on May 16th. Trust me with this… they are all excellent sneakers. Even if you don't skate (I know, I shouldn't have said that) you might want to consider picking these from the sheer endless stream of monthly/weekly/daily releases. Besides the black and white Pro Primeknits I especially like the butter soft grey suede Pro Trainer. All styles, by the way, are newly developed with a few familiar elements here and there.

If there is no Civilist in your neighborhood - don't worry, they'll gladly ship them anywhwere on the globe.

Keith Haring "The Political Line" at Hypo Kunsthalle from May 1st until August 30th.

"In New York, during the conservatism of the Reagan era, Keith Haring (1958–1990) made it his mission to highlight social evils in his work. He took a clear stance against the excesses of capitalism and was committed to nuclear disarmament, environmental protection and equal rights for all, irrespective of ethnicity, skin colour, religion or sexual orientation. This retrospective focuses on the political and sociocritical aspects of Haring’s oeuvre, which have been somewhat overlooked in previous exhibitions."

“The Bridges of Graffiti exhibition will debut in Venice on the occasion of the 56th International Art Exhibition la Biennale di Venezia.

The Bridges of Graffiti project positions itself 30 years after Arte di Frontiera. New York Graffiti, the exhibition curated by Francesca Alinovi that in 1984 brought the New York graffiti writers artistic scene in Italy.

Traditional spray-painted graffiti artworks were born at the geographic edges of Manhattan, a frontier in itself, and also 'an intermediate space between culture and nature, mass and elite, black and white, aggressiveness and irony, trash and exquisite refinement'.

The ten artists involved - Boris Tellegen, Doze Green, Eron, Futura, Mode2, SKKI©, Jayone, Todd James, Teach, Zero-T - will work together for the very first time, bringing to life a single cohesive Hall of Fame piece within the Arterminal walls, together with some site specific works conceived especially for the exhibition."

Katharina Grosse: The Smoking Kid

Katharina Grosse: The Smoking Kid, König Galerie Berlin

Over the Berlin Gallery Weekend 2015, the König Galerie takes great pleasure in opening its new gallery space in the St. Agnes Church, now reconstructed by Arno Brandlhuber, with an exhibition of work by Katharina Grosse.

Katharina Grosse stands for colour-intensive, multi-layered, expansive painting, which moves into space, appropriates spaces or opens up spaces for the very first time. With the spray technique characteristic of her, the artist applies colour precisely not only to two-dimensional surfaces but also to undermaterials such as earth and plants, furniture, clothing and architecture. Thus for the 56th Venice Biennale, All the World’s Futures curated by Okwui Enwezor (09.05. – 22.11.2015), she is creating Untitled Trumpet, a vast-scale, walk-in painting in the Arsenale.

In The Smoking Kid, her third exhibition in the Galerie Johann König, Katharina Grosse presents pictures on canvas which seem as if made for the imposing, lofty space in which they are being shown.

These humble bags — and the nylon fabric they are made from — have become an iconic part of Hong Kong culture.

They are on sale at any of the countless street markets and red, white and blue tarps are a common sight at construction sites and market stalls. It is a hardy, versatile material and truly embodies Hong Kong’s industrious side.

As a perfect match for the ZX Flux, CLOT has opted for a nylon-fabric upper and decked out the shoes in this bold red, white and blue print pattern — subtly incorporating their signature logo into the design. Adding to the look CLOT chose blue heel counters, red laces and eyelets, a transparent Three Stripes branding on the sides, and clean gum soles.

Little Cloud T-shirt

I have yet to taste visvim's Little Cloud coffee yet, however the aesthetics are - as expected - very appealing. If you are a fan you could get the logo T-shirt from the brand's online shop. At US$ 65,- it's quite a steal, too.

Learn more about visvim Little Cloud coffee on their website or pick up the T-shirt online (and in-store, obviously).

Pas Normal Studios Brand Launch

Pas Normal Studios International Cycling Club

Launch of Pas Normal Studios, high-end, cutting edge race and training wear paired with a distinct contemporary look and feel.

Co-Founder, Karl-Oskar Olsen says:
“We decided to start from scratch and define what type of cycling clothing we felt was missing in the vast choice there is on the market today. We wanted to produce uncompromised performance wear that also kept a very clear fashion element as its most defining feature. We felt that on the market today, you often had to pick one or the other. We are very conscious about the traditions in cycling, but we are not a retro based brand and all our styles are visibly inspired by the colors and patterns of today”.

The Museum of Modern Art presents a retrospective of the multifaceted work of composer, musician, and singer Björk. The exhibition draws from more than 20 years of the artist’s daring and innovative projects and her eight full-length albums to chronicle her career through sound, film, visuals, instruments, objects, and costumes.

Don't miss the accompanying catalogue: Designed by top graphic design agency M/M as a slipcased world of wonders, this publication is composed of six parts: four booklets, a paperback, and a poster.

Uniformes Generale

Uniformes Generale Colourblock Pocket T-shirt

Colourblock Pocket T-shirt

Uniformes Generale is one of the (few) exciting new brands on the market. Not too 'fashion' not too 'basic' - just the perfect balance. I especially like this new Colourblock Pocket T-shirt and when reading the details it's clear why:

"We recreated this fabric from an original 50s jersey bought in Tokyo. It's really heavy and this coupled with the details such as chest pocket, side vents and overlocked neck V make it a very special item indeed. And that’s before we have even mentioned the artwork. Inspired by the very first hand painted fibre glass surf boards of the 50s we created the original artwork by hand with brushes."

visvim G-Line

visvim G-Line, USA SS 2007 01

USA Spring/Summer 2007

Over the years I have kept an archive - my "data raw" files - of images that I've used for posts on Beinghunted or that I simply wanted to hold on to. A lot of this data was provided by the brands and creatives directly, some I sourced through other news websites. The set of photos taken in visvim's US showroom in 2006 showing their spring/summer 2007 collection might have come from the team there. I still have the official invitation to the exhibition (you need to dig through my Instagram account and go way back...) and I might have even posted a bit in the news section...

In any case, I'm glad I have these photos and especially the one that shows the washed camo Gore-Tex jackets. Luckily I was able to get hold of a G. Blackpool (aka Bickle) a few years back. It wasn't that easy, as this collection - the visvim G-Line - was only distributed throughout the US (and available as FIL exclusive in Japan) thus produced in minuscule numbers.

Fredericks & Mae

Fredericks & Mae Arrows 02

Darts, Arrows, Tassles

These arrows reminded me of the installations by Matt Clark (HOUSTON) only that the ones by Fredericks and Mae are the actual pieces of art:

"Thread wrapped and fletched using turkey, peacock, or macaw feathers, our arrows are for decorative or ceremonial use. The history of arrows predate recorded history and are common to most cultures. An arrow usually consists of a shaft with an arrowhead attached to the front end, with fletchings at the other."

But there is much more to discover from the design duo!

Head Porter Plus

Head Porter Plus Baseball T-shirt

Baseball L/S T-shirt

Without a doubt, Head Porter Plus always delivers. Last summer it was their short-sleeved Oxford shirts. In the fall they released the best (and affordable) MA-1 jacket and it seems that this spring they are, once again, offering a respectable collection of well-designed, well-produced sophisticated basics. I like this new baseball longsleeve and I'm also looking forward to seeing the new coach jacket that was previewed a few days ago with the launch of the new Cycle 3-way shoulder bag.

Looky Looky Interview

Looky Looky Posse - Interview Joerg Haas

Interview

Sorry, this one is only for the German-speaking readers among you. All the rest might try Google Translator, though, as I'm sure something equally entertaining (?) will come out.

Looky Looky invited me to their HQ for a relaxed interview about life, evolution, literature, classical music, high fashion and fine art. What started out as a calm and pleasant chat quickly turned into an almost painful and strenuous interrogation-type situation. These girls are tough! Their investigative impulses took over and I felt cornered and at times intimidated even. But it was well worth it. They dug very deep and got me "to talk". All barriers down...

Thanks girls, sometimes it's worth taking it one step further!

Shepard Fairey & Cleon Peterson: Pattern of Corruption

Pattern of Corruption Prints

"Cleon Peterson and I recently collaborated on a mural in Miami’s Wynwood district and were happy enough with the end result to decide to make some limited edition screen prints inspired by the mural. Cleon and I both deal with the persistent themes of the fragility of society, human savagery, and corruption in our work. The image has a dichotomy in its hypnotic classical floral pattern with sinister elements woven into it, which caution the viewer to look deeper than an appealing surface presentation."

at Virginia MOCA

Ryan McGinness: Studio Visit explores the creative process of a Virginia Beach native and artist. In 2009, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) commissioned a work inspired by the museum’s collection. The result is a 16-panel painting containing 200 icons that reference works from the VMFA. We now have an opportunity to see how McGinness conceived and created this stunning work.

There are three parts to this exhibition. The first provides a glimpse of McGinness’ studio practice. Listen to his favorite playlist as you see the artist screenprint the final work! The second shows early artworks he made while growing up in Virginia Beach. Finally, you can see some of the objects McGinness chose from the VMFA museum collection with his sketches and final image.

Suicoke Sandals

Suicoke Sandals DEPA-ecs

Spring/Summer 2015

You might have heard of Suicoke's sandals last summer. The launch of their exclusive colorway for Norse Projects created a bit of a stir and, consequently, a very swift sale of this special model. Relatively unknown outside of Japan it was nearly impossible to purchase any of their regular styles - last year. This year, however, it seems as if a handful of global retailers have picked up the brand.

The new range of sandals for spring/summer 2015 is quite wide and can be differentiated by the upper strap construction as well as the choice of Vibram soles in varying heights. There are a handful of flat, more archaic looking models, but also some sturdier designs for rougher terrains.

You can find a complete preview of all Suicoke Sandals on their website as well as a list of global retailers who are expected to receive their deliveries as soon as temperatures rise...

Nikelab Johanna F. Schneider

Freunde von Freunden: Nikelab / Johanna Schneider Home

Freunde von Freunden Feature

Just in recent weeks I've been emailing with many creatives I've met through Beinghunted over a period of more than a decade. It was interesting to catch up, to see what happened in the meantime and what they are currently occupied with. Johanna I've known for a little over five years through her involvement at ACRONYM but also through mutual friends. It's great to witness the progress and to see the impressive results of her own design project with Nike.

While a preview of her collection for Nike was hosted in New York a few months ago, the line was officially launched yesterday here in Berlin. Even just by looking at the press shots it becomes evident that Johanna managed to thoroughly rethink and rework a category - women's sports apparel - that up until now appeared to be widely neglected and overseen. Nike's Gyakusou running collection laid the groundwork. Now it's designers such as Johanna who can take athletic apparel to a new stage.

If you would like to find out more about Johanna, how she lives, how she works and how she came to work with Nike on this new collection, head over to Freunde von Freunden.

Eames DSW Army Issue

Herman Miller Eames DSW Army Chair

Herman Miller: Eames DSW Army Issue

Let's start the week with a treasure for you to hunt for. That's what this website is (used to be...) about, right?

The above is a set of the classic Eames DSW chairs, however these were produced by Herman Miller under contract for the US army. Apparently, and I've not read or heard differently, these were only used for US troops stationed in Germany during the 1960s and 70s. The original fiberglass seats show drilled holes for the chairs' outdoor use. They are also numbered and appear in different shades of olive but also beige.

If this particular style of chair seems a bit over-exposed in recent years, I'm sure you'll like the Army Issue DSW. Good luck finding a set!

I’m a big fan of the things that I shoot, I feel that all the people I shoot are not alone in their drive to do great things and they all are amazing individuals from all different walks of life. I’m lucky to photograph them. ”

Saner Primitivo

Saner Primitivo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Primitivo, a series of new works by Mexican artist Saner, in what will be his debut solo exhibition at the gallery.

Saner’s works are heavily influenced by traditional Mexican customs and folklore. For Primitivo, the artist created lively portraits of characters wearing Nahuale masks reminiscent of those found on the streets of Mexico and according to legend, have the power to transform human beings into animals. Drawing from the visual culture of his everyday life, his paintings are a celebration of the local environment they originate from.

Lizard Footwear Sandals

Lizard Footwear Sandals Kiota H2O

Kiota H2O

Even though we have at least 4 more months before the climate is right, let's use the time to research and review our options. For sandals... Yes. Sandals. Norse Projects' highly successful launch of their collab model with Japanese brand Suicoke was the first sign of a new post/parallel-sneaker trend. The timing couldn't be better with a renewed interest for outdoor gear in 2015.

Let's take a look at Lizard Footwear from Italy and their key style, the Kiota H2O sandal. Even though it features modern materials the look is very "old-school" with its thin outsole and multi-strap construction. Where other brands have simplified, Lizard seems to have added material for a better fit and improved stability.

Surf Craft Exhibition

Surf Craft Exhibition at Mingei Institute

At Mingei Institute

People have made surfboards for centuries. Standing alone, these boards are often striking examples of functional design. Together, they tell a compelling story about the evolution of an important American art form. Traditional craft, cutting-edge engineering and minimalist art converge in the Museum’s new exhibition devoted to surfboards built from the late 1940s to the present day.

Surf Craft – Design and the Culture of Board Riding opened June 21, 2014 and is on view for a few more days until January 11th. Surf Craft is a unique surfboard exhibition exploring board design from a previously unexamined perspective: in the context of Soetsu Yanagi’s mingei philosophy of the importance of craft.

If you cannot make it to the show, visit Surfer Mag's feature with some amazing shots of the displays.

Outdoor Equipment

All the signs point towards 2015 being the year we spend a lot of time outdoors. Hopefully, as there is a lot to see and catching a breath of fresh air does a body good. Especially when spending hours and hours behind the screen.

I've recently ventured into the world of outdoor equipment and besides my favorite from Japan, Snow Peak, discovered more brands that make "cool" stuff. Clearly, functionality plays a/the major role in designing equipment to be carried up a mountain, but it is apparent that equal effort is put into making these items look great. Take the Esbit kettle for example, made from black anodized aluminium! I would want to use it at home, too. But then it doesn't make much sense to prepare tea on a camping burner when you have a proper stove... So, let's venture out(doors) then...

Ken Adam Bigger Than Life

Ken Adams Bigger Than Life

Film Design

Sir Ken Adam is one of the most innovative and most influential production designers of our time. His sets for Stanley Kubrick’s "Dr. Strangelove" (1964) and the James Bond films from "Dr. No" (1962) to "Moonraker" (1979) – all spectacular and trendsetting designs in equal measure – have written film history.

In 2012, Adam, who was born in Berlin in 1921 and had to go into exile with his family in 1934, gave his entire artistic œuvre to the Deutsche Kinemathek, including more than 4000 drawings. The exhibition takes a new look at the work of this unusual artist and designer, while also allowing Ken Adam’s creative process to come to life through multimedia presentations.

Star Wars Lego Slave I Main 75060

New Year's Highlight

Two years ago I reported (and picked up...) the Star Wars Lego set "Jabba's Palace". This year I'm tempted once again...

On January 1st Lego released a new version of the Slave I (75060). This latest iteration of Boba Fett's ship is the most detailed and elaborate yet. With impressive dimensions - 45 x 20 x 37 cm - this model is a definite centerpiece in every collection. If you plan on purchasing the set as an investment, keep in mind to get it with an English manual.

Gottfried Lindauer. The Maori Portraits

Gottfried Lindauer: Maori Portraits, Berlin

Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin

With the exhibition, Gottfried Lindauer. The Māori Portraits, the Nationalgalerie will, for the first time, present Gottfried Lindauer (1839-1926), whose works are all but unknown outside of New Zealand.

It is the first time that the descendants of the personalities depicted have, together with Haerewa (Māori scholars and artists acting as consultants to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki), given permission for the pictures to be shown outside of Aotearoa/New Zealand. The pictures have never left New Zealand because, for the descendants of the personalities depicted, the memory of their ancestors is part of living and the former are always mindful of the bonds tying successive generations to their lineage, history and identity right up to today.
