Print. Part II - Sonic, Lodown, Clark, Sneaker Freaker, Soda

"Later this week" turned into "in two weeks"... Sorry for the delay in bringing you our part two of printed matter for July. The good side to this is that a couple more things piled up on our table in the meantime.

Sonic by Die Gestalten: have you ever spent money on albums that simply looked ace? You never actually listened to the songs but bought only because of the cover artwork... Sonic could have saved you lots of money. In there you will find all the CDs, Flyers, posters you ever wanted. But will it keep you from buying them now anyway? No, now you want even more...

Lodown: we have 2 covers for the latest issue. But will both of them be published? In #42 you'll see our fav jacket, their fav tees, Risszeichnungen by C. Anczykowski, art by the Clayton Brothers, and so much more.

Clark: brighten/lighten up your French studies with this magazine that will let you know what 'street' means en français. This month: Andy Hôwell, Bête Boys, Supersonique Jeunesse, Glen É. Friedman, etc.

Sneaker Freaker: went to Tokyo and met everyone. They spoke with Hiroshi, Hiroki, all the sneaker heads, visited all the stores, did everything. Tokyo is covered - sneaker-wise.

Soda: is not a magazine but a store in (one of) our hometown(s), Munich. They have everything and they get everything. They are the only place to sell Refill and Made Magazine. And, yes, they do ship. Those deer antlers add a nice BGHD touch to the interior... Should we move in?

Sculpture. Coarsetoys

Coarsetoys - they hit the toy sphere last year with a publication (I hate my Job*) that had people wonder. Wonder whether the depicted figures were only digital renderings or the actual handiwork of one insane sculptor. When the first physical figures started appearing, it was clear - these were for real.

Back then you had to be incredibly lucky to get a hold of one of the very few hand-made pieces of art. And incredibly wealthy, too. The feedback on this first Da Nasty Breed set was overwhelming and had the guys at Coarsetoys think... to find a way to let more people enjoy their figures which meant to find an adequate partner.

Vans instantly recognized the value of this project and agreed to help out in the production of the first (limited) set of figures which are now sporting Vans footwear. The figures are wearing the real things... in miniature. If you wanted us to get into detail about these figures now, we would need to start a new site - Beingcoarsetoys.com.

Coarsetoys are giving away two sets in the context of a design competition that is running parallel on Rift Trooper and our site. Here is a warning, though: if you win one edition you will need the rest, too...

Roadtrip. Berlin

From past Thursday until Sunday Berlin was not Berlin. It was LosAngelesSanFranciscoLondonParisMilanTokyo... all in one city. With Bread & Butter and Premium running alongside the city saw one of the highest densities of fashion/art/design oriented humans on the planet. While before it was hard to set up one's schedule for most/many/some of the events, this time it was plain impossible.

Thursday: opening of Ben Sansbury's show and party at Cookie's [...]. Friday: invasion of Nort's gallery space for Stash's exhibition, party Japanese-style at Koi Club, dance at Watergate [...]. Saturday: lounge at Café Moskau with the new folks behind Stüssy Germany, get trashed (literally) at Vice's party at Maria, get really wet at Badeschiff [...].

If you had the nerve, the trade show itself - at least B & B - was worth going to, as well: "Untitled" by Streetwear Today and Lodown documented 'street culture', ONETrueSaxon impressed with their caravan & fake grass stall while Zoo York had everyone return to pre-school age with their waterpistol give-aways.

Some keywords: Berlin Escape, S2C 25th anniversary, Visvim deerskin FBT, Coarse Toys, Nike Considered, adidas anniversary...?

Print. Relax, Hawaii

It seems as if Hawaii is everywhere these days. Relax came in last week - what's on the title and makes up about 50 % of the magazine? Hawaii. tyler magazine - sufer portraits from... Hawaii. Spectacle - Hawaii. It might seem like we're jumping the bandwagon with our bit here, but, honestly, this Hawaiian wave caught us by surprise.

Here are our island stories. Relax #90 basically documents the whole island. There is probably not one bug, not one stone that has not been photographed or interviewed for this huge special. Well, ok, it's not that 'bad'. They actually picked only the most interesting characters and projects and covered these in true Relax-style. And here is the coincidence...

Print. Part I

So much paper has piled up on our desk(s) that we need to split this post into two. We'll begin with France, Belgium and Japan. In Part II later this week we take a look at what's going on in Germany and Australia.

tyler, our favourite French sports magazine, reached our offices a couple of days ago with "La première superstar de la NBA" on its cover - Julius Erving! On your way to the feature you'll come across b/w portraits of Hawaiian surfers (more to come from this island...) and the all-important "Sneaker Addict" section - those Converse 0044 are serious!

From Belgium comes Voxer, "The Independent Voice", with features on the Total 90 project with Futura, Delta, Mode 2, art by Rama, and lots of CDs, vinyls and books reviewed. We especially like the Byzoleum Spectra Colors as seen in their "Weaponry" section.

Huge magazine you should be familiar with by now. The current issue brings you over to Germany to stop by the adidas HQs (more from this field trip in August) on your way to Berlin where they will give you the big tour. Plus the necessary items from G1950, HP, HG, Nexus7, Neighborhood... Spectacle is a new skateboard magazine. Just listen to this list of advertisers - and if those are in it, you know it's a good one: UNDFTD, Philosophy, UXA, Vehicle, Complete Finesse, MAD, HUF, Bounty Hunter.

Custom. Solebox x Living Mutants

Let's say a company spends a considerable amount of time on developing a certain product. They employ designers, researchers, engineers, etc. in order to come up with the best of what can be done (at least at the quality driven companies this is/should be the case). For many new products special machinery has to be developed, tools have to be adjusted, often, even new materials will have to be found (or designed) in order to meet the specifics of the product. Why then, after all the efforts, the knowledge, the money that has been invested, do some people feel the urge to 'make things better' by altering them, tuning them, customizing them...? Why would one want to interfere with the experiences of a team of professional product designers...?

Because sometimes these people are confined by corporate obligations to come up with items suitable for mass production. Details are lost 'on the way', ideas will be compromised. Solebox and Living Mutants show us what can be done if that extra time is spent, if no compromises have to be met, if those two more steps are taken. They also prove that customization of shoes is far from being a paint-job only. These guys deliver the most exciting modified Dunk to-date! Ten pairs of this model will be available at Solebox Berlin from July 16th. Watch out for their special sales policy!

Athletic footwear. adidas Athens 2004

Ever since we first heard from the guys at Callous we have been in touch and following their trail. They have offered us an in-depth look into almost every aspect of shoemaking. And not only that. Starting their own company had them also involved in setting up a sales network. Other than doing it on a local level only (or first) their aim was/is to be able to offer their product through outlets all over the globe.

It was through this relationship that ideas were exchanged which gradually took form. One of these ideas - the obvious it seems - was to work on creating a product that would represent Callous and Beinghunted in a sound way altogether. The outcome of this joint effort is the Callous x Beinghunted Tachikaze which we are showing you above.

The colors, as well as their arrangement are inspired by the Golden Eagle, a raptor which is said to be one of the most dexterous and majestic birds of prey in the northern hemisphere. This bird was not simply chosen for its appearance but also because of it's 'internationality' - its habitat spreads over North America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia.

The Callous x Beinghunted Tachikaze is produced in a limited run of 120 pairs and will be distributed through a small number of retail outlets world wide from August. A part of the profit from this project will be given to a bird conservatory society. Also visit Callous' website for a complete list of their upcoming models.

Retro. Vinti Andrews

Follow-up time... Last November we first told you about Vinti Andrew's spring collection. Now it's time to talk about their autumn/winter '05 line. They stuck to what they do best - transforming vintage track suits into various pieces of clothing for men and women. Whatever fabric they have left, they'll wrap around higheels, sew together stuffed animals, or re-use as womens' bags.

At a first glance you might say "Ah, come on, I could 've done that." But at a closer look, you should rather say "Wow, how did they do that?". What we are referring to is the precicsion that Vinti Andrews apply to all of their items. They just don't simply cut-up-and-reassemble. Everything is carefully laid out. The original logos and tags are all placed so that they perfectly fit with the shapes of the pieces; whether it'd be the printed adidas trefoil that appears on the toes of a shoe or the embroidered Nike swoosh that will adorn the head of a teddy or bunny.

If you feel that you have grown out of the sneaker/sportswear scene but are still attached to it, Vinti Andrews could help you out. Especially the women. They can subsitute those chunky trainers for a pair of elegant heels that still have that athletic feel to them. Vinit Andrews is available from The Pineal Eye, London.

Design. Answer

After their highly succesful collaboration with Mark Bodé and A Bathing Ape Answer return to us with a new series of t-shirt designs for the summer. As always, these guys let the graphics speak for the label and what they have to say is well worth listening to. It is a coordinated speech of basic slogans, philosophical notions, or simplistic descriptions. When they fall silent it's because the visuals carry enough meaning that one does not have to elaborate on them any further... with the spoken word.

Ok, enough now with this absurd 'artsy' journalistic gibberish. Answer know what to put on t-shirts but if you don't feel this kind of clothing suits your style well enough, get the set anyways and hang them up on your wall. They are little pieces of art and that's why we're also showing you the original designs - pure, lifted from their cotton canvases. Our favourite - the Eames plywood chair - is not yet available. We'll show it to you anyways... it's a definite winner!

If you would like to support Answer by sporting their logo on your chest - you'll find a big and bold design to support your mission. Check our Quick box for an update on the 'where' and 'when'.
