Introduction

Berlin, June 2007

My first encounter with Dennis was at the Stüssy World Tour Party at Parkcafé in Munich some fifteen years ago. Back then we
used to bring our own drinks (the first Red Bull at that time - imported illegaly from Austria...) and would hide them right outside
the clubs - to save money. So while we were out having a zip, Dennis showed up, asking us whether we had problems getting in
and that he'd make sure to get us in if necessary. Even though we only exchanged a few words, this brief meeting somehow
stuck in my memory. I guess the extremely rare Stüssy Spraycan jacket which Dennis was wearing - and which I had been looking
at in this small shop in Munich for ages - did serve as a clue, a mental note that I put 'on file'. Dennis frequently appeared in articles
about youth culture - graffiti, Hip Hop, sneakers - and sometimes even as a model sporting the latest Goodenough, Stüssy, Anarchic
Adjustment, or Vivenne Westwood gear. Without the internet, eMail, etc., finding information on these labels was nearly impossible.
So whenever something did appear in a magazine it was a great surprise and a little sensation. At least for me at the time. Events
like the Stüssy Party, club nights like Into Something at Babalu, shops like Recordstore and Delirium (both carrying Goodenough,
Anarchic Adjustment, Hysteric Glamour, etc.) all played a role in forming my taste for music and clothing, nurturing my interest in
cities like London and New York and also Berlin, eventually.

As Dennis points out in the interview, many of the people who were supporting this 'scene' over 15 years ago are still in the game,
still pushing... Even though looking back might seem nostalgic and unprogressive I believe that it is necessary to know the past in
order to be able to be innovative in the present, for the future. In order to be able to judge on the relevance of things which are sold
to us as 'new' or 'exciting' we need to know what has already been done...

After those fifteen years, I met Dennis again - at our store Firmament here in Berlin which is just around the corner from his apartment.
He has become a good friend and our conversations have become a bit more in-depth, too. Turning one of these conversations into an
interview/feature was just a logical step. So now, let's take a look back to the beginnings of what people today like to call the "s.c." word.
